Following the war, in 1866,
portions of Macon, Montgomery, Barbour and Pike counties were brought together
to form a new one.
This new county was named Bullock in honor of Confederate hero Col. E. C. Bullock.
History records Bullock County as having been settled first by Creek Indians during
the early 1800, but as they moved out, families from surrounding states came in.
Homes, churches and schools were built, thus laying the foundation for the early
development of Bullock County.
These days timber production is a major industry in Bullock County. Other income
producing products are cattle, dairy, broilers, nursery and bedding plants, seed
crops, turf. peanuts, corn, and pecans. |
Bullock County has some of
the best hunting and fishing in the south. It is known world wide for field dog
trials and hunting. Union Springs is known as "The Bird Dog Field Trial Capital
of the World."
The county is full of quail, dove, wild turkey, and deer.
Fishing is an excellent year round sport due to the mild winters. Bass, bream,
and catfish abound in near by lakes, rivers and many well stocked ponds.
If hunting and fishing are not for you, Bullock County is filled with places to
picnic or hike to enjoy the outdoors and the wild life.
Towns and cities include Midway, Smut Eye, Perote and Thompson. |
