| About
Union Springs AL |
Union Springs is the county
seat of Bullock County.
Located in southeast Alabama, it is a small rural community located a short drive
from several major metropolitan areas.
In 1832, following a bitter war between the Indians and the early white settlers,
the Creeks ceded all their lands east of the Mississippi River.
This allowed families from surrounding states to move in and find a new life in
this prosperous countryside. Within three short years, churches, schools and stores
began appearing as the community of Union Springs was born.
Union Springs became quite prosperous prior to the Civil War, boasting of numerous
factories, tanneries, hotels and mercantile shops.
|
Following the war, in 1866,
portions of Macon, Montgomery, Barbour and Pike counties were brought together
to form a new one. This new county was named Bullock in honor of Confederate hero
Col. E. C. Bullock.
Union Springs was incorporated in 1844 and still has much of its rich historic
flavor and has some of the loveliest turn-of-the century homes in the South as
well as modern styles and apartment complexes.
The entire downtown area in Union Springs has been designated an historic district.
Self-designated the "Serendipity Center of the South," Union Springs'
active citizenry works to continue improving the quality of life in the City while
preserving its small-town atmosphere.
