Delphinium
Common names: delphinium, larkspur.
Delphinium is a genus of about 250 species of annual, biennial or perennial flowering
plants in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, native throughout the Northern Hemisphere
and also on some high mountains of tropical Africa.
Its common name, shared with its closely related genus Consolida, is Larkspur.
Many species of this flower are cultivated as garden plants, with numerous cultivars
having been selected for their denser, more prominent flowers.
Delphiniums provide some beautifult cut flowers with a color range including blue,
lavender, purple, pink, salmon, rose, red, white, also some bi-colored flower
types.
Flowers grow along spikes with stems that are 1 to 6 feet long.
The flower can be either single or double, and foliage is medium green and leafy.
Vase life as a cut flower ranges from four to 12 days. |
Orchid
Common names: orchid, cymbidium, dendrobium, oncidium, cattleya, phalaenopsis.
Orchids (Orchidaceae family) are among the largest, most diverse of flowering
plant families, with over 800 described genera covering 25,000 species, with another
100,000 plus hybrids or cultivars produced by horticulturalists.
Oncidium blossoms are 1 1/2 to 1 inch, usually yellow with orange-red flower markings.
Cattleya blossoms are large, ruffled, usually 5 to 6 inches across in white or
purple with contrasting throats.
Phalaenopsis have a moth or butterfly-shaped flower in colors such as white, pink,
purple or bicolors.
Cymbidium and dendrobium flowers have a butterfly-like shape flower that are 3
to 4 inches across.
The larger, cymbidiums have a flower which is white, yellow, green or lavender
with pink or red lips, while dendrobiums are often white or lavender. |
