| About Massachusetts |
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts
is bordered on the north by New Hampshire and Vermont, on the west by New York,
on the south by Connecticut and Rhode Island, and on the east by the Atlantic
Ocean.
Massachusetts is known as the Bay State because of the several large bays that
give its coastline its distinctive shape.
At the southeastern corner of Massachusetts is a large, sandy, arm-shaped peninsula
called Cape Cod.
The islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket lie to the south of Cape Cod. |
Massachusetts was initially
founded by staunch Puritans in the 17th century and remained a majority Yankee
state for most of its history.
On February 6, 1788, Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify the United
States Constitution.
Today, Massachusetts agricultural outputs are seafood, nursery stock, dairy products,
cranberries, and vegetables, and its industrial outputs are machinery, electric
equipment, scientific instruments, printing, and publishing. |

Iris
Common names: iris, netted iris, Dutch iris.
Iris is a genus of flowering plants with showy flowers which takes its name from Latin for rainbow, referring to a wide variety of flower colors found among its many species as well as countless garden cultivars.
They are perennial herbs growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises),
or, in drier climates, from bulbs (bulbous irises).
Flowers open to 1 to 3 inches across.
Long, thin, pointed leaves grow from the stem base.
Colors include bluish-purple, deep purple, lavender, white or yellow.
Many have yellow petal markings.
Vase life is two to five days. |
Snapdragon
Common names: snapdragon.
Antirrhinum is a genus of plants that used to be the family Scrophulariaceae,
more commonly known as snapdragons from its flowers' fancied resemblance to the
face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when properly squeezed.
These tall-spike stems usually have fully opened florets upon arrival with flower buds on the upper portion showing a hint of color.
Flower colors include pink, purple, lavender, white, yellow, orange or burgundy.
Snapdragons are available year-round, as a cut flower they will last five to 10 days.
Special care: Snapdragons drink lots of water, so check water level frequently.
