About Maine
Maine was at one time part of Massachusetts.
It became its own state in 1820, becoming the 23rd state admitted to the United States of America, although its northern borders were not finalized until 1842.
Once Maine became a separate state there followed a period of tremendous economic growth in which a number of important mining and manufacturing industries emerged.
In addition to lumbering, the traditional fishing and shipbuilding pursuits entered a boom period.
Ice harvesting, granite and lime quarrying also developed as important industries.
The temperance movement had its origins in Maine, and to one degree or another dominated the political life of this state for more than a century.
The world's first Total Abstinence Society was founded in Portland in 1815.
A state organization of temperance societies was formed in 1834, and within a dozen years had forced the enactment of a state law prohibiting the sale of alcoholic spirits except for "medicinal and mechanical" purposes.
Maine approved a total ban on the manufacture and sale of liquor in 1851.
This so-called "Maine Law" remained in effect, in one form or another, until the repeal of National Prohibition in 1934.

Common names: delphinium, larkspur.
Delphinium is a genus of about 250 species of annual, biennial or perennial flowering plants in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, native throughout the Northern Hemisphere and also on some high mountains of tropical Africa.
The common name, shared with its closely related genus Consolida, is Larkspur.
Many species of this flower are cultivated as garden plants, with numerous cultivars having been selected for their denser, more prominent flowers.
Delphiniums provide some of the best cut flowers with a color range including blue, lavender, purple, pink, salmon, rose, red, white, also some bi-colored flower types.
Flowers grow along spikes with stems that are 1 to 6 feet long.
Flowers are either single or double, foliage is medium green and leafy.

Orchids (Orchidaceae family) are among the largest, most diverse of flowering plant families, with over 800 described genera covering 25,000 species, with another 100,000 plus hybrids or cultivars produced by horticulturalists.
Oncidium blossoms are 1 1/2 to 1 inch, usually yellow with orange-red flower markings.
Cattleya blossoms are large, ruffled, usually 5 to 6 inches across in white or purple with contrasting throats.
Phalaenopsis have moth or butterfly-shaped flowers in colors such as white, pink, purple or bicolors.

The larger, cymbidiums, are white, yellow, green or lavender with pink or red lips, while dendrobiums are often white or lavender.
