| About Buffalo New York |
The Village of Buffalo was originally surveyed and laid out for the Holland Land Company
in 1804 by Joseph Ellicott.
The village grew relatively slowly until the war of 1812 when Buffalo became a "Military Resort".
In December, 1813, the place
was entered by the British and Indians, and every building but two was burnt.
In 1821 Erie County was carved out of Niagara County and Buffalo became the county seat.
Upon the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825, Buffalo became the western end of the 524-mile waterway starting at New York City. |
At the time Buffalo had a population of about 2,400 people.
At the turn of the century, Buffalo was a growing city with a burgeoning economy.
In the 21st Century, Buffalo has become a center for bio-informatics and
human genome research, including work by researchers at the University at Buffalo and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
