| About
Chicago IL |
Chicago is located in the Midwestern
state of Illinois along the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan.
During the mid-1700s, the Chicago area was inhabited primarily by Potawatomis,
who are an American Indian people of the upper Mississippi River region.
The name Chicago was derived from the Potawatomi language, and the name itself
has probably been distorted over time, but the original meaning was land of smelly
onions, and was prounounced She-Ka-Gan.
Chicago incorporated on March 4, 1837 when the State of Illinois granted Chicago
a city charter. |
The city was the logical transportation
link between eastern and western United States, using the Great Lakes and the
river systems, and the railroads.
By 1890, Chicago was the second largest city in the United States, after New York
City. Chicago grew to 1.1 million people in less than sixty years.
Today, Chicago remains the United States' second financial center with the nation's
second largest central business district and third largest gross metropolitan
product.
Chicago's gross metropolitan product would rank 18th in the world if it were a
nation-state. |
