Located on the Ohio River,
Cincinnati has been a prosperous town ever since its founding as an Indian trading
post in 1788.
In 1802, Cincinnati was chartered as a village, and in 1819, it was incorporated
as a city.
The introduction of steam navigation on the Ohio River in 1811 and the completion
of the Miami and Erie Canal helped the city grow to 115,000 citizens by 1850.
The nickname Porkopolis was coined around 1835, when Cincinnati was the country's
chief hog packing center, and herds of pigs traveled the streets.
Because of the city's rich German heritage, the pre-prohibition era allowed Cincinnati
to become a national forerunner in the brewing industry. |

Liatris
Common names: liatris, spike gayfeather
Liatris belongs to the Compositae family.
About 40 species of this hardy perennial flower grow across North America, from
southern Canada to northern Mexico, also east of the Rocky Mountains through Florida.
Liatris spicata, L. aspera Michx. and L. pycnostachya Michx. are major commercial species, often used as colorful accents in cut flower arrangements or bouquets.
Unlike other flowers, liatris flowers open from its stem top downward.
Clustered along the spike, they have a feathery look.
Various shades of deep lavender are most common; other flower colors are bluish shades, violet or white. |
Statice
Common names: statice, limonium, English statice, German statice, seafoam statice,
latifolia.
Sea-lavender (also Sea Lavender, Sealavender) or Statice is a genus Limonium of
flowering plants with about 120 species.
This genus was formerly often known as Statice.
These cut flowers are available in several varieties, they are extemely popular with florists/flower arrangers.
English statice carries 1- to 2-inch clusters of calyxes, each about 1/2 inch
across.
Flower stems are 1 to 1 1/2 feet long.
Seafoam statices have smaller calyxes, arched clusters, smooth stems with no foliage.
German statices have small gray bracts that arch backward.
English statice calyxes are yellow, white, purple, lavender or pink with tiny
white or yellow flowers inside.
Latifolia calyxes are white with blue-violet flowers. |
