Mesa AZ |
The history of Mesa dates back
two thousand years to the Hohokam Indians.
The Hohokam people lived in the Salt River Valley for hundreds of years, building
a canal system to water their fields. They left the valley in the 1400s, but their
canals remained.
When colonists arrived in February 1878, they used an abandoned Hohokam canal
for part of their first irrigation project, the Mesa Canal.
Dr. A.J. Chandler, who later started the city bearing his name south of Mesa,
enlarged the Mesa Canal with heavy machinery in 1895.
Dr. Chandler also built the first office complex in Mesa, on the northwest corner
of Main and Macdonald, using the first evaporative air cooling system in Arizona.
Rail service came to Mesa in December 1895, when the Maricopa & Phoenix &
Salt River Valley Railroad began running trains between Mesa and Tempe. |
Mesa acquired electricity
in 1898, when a hydroelectric power plant was built on the new Crosscut Canal.
Falcon Field Airport and Williams Air Force Base were built in 1941 to provide
training for World War II pilots, Falcon Field for the British Royal Air Force
and Williams for U.S. pilots.
Today, Mesa is one of the nation's fastest-growing cities.
It is the second largest city in the metropolitan area of Phoenix and the third
largest city in Arizona, after Tucson.
The mild winter climate, beautiful environment, and strong economic conditions
attract more residents to Mesa every year.

Gerbera
Common names: gerbera, gerbera daisy.
Gerbera L., is a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family (Asteraceae).
Its daisy-like flower grows to 5 inches wide with layers of thin petals.

single-flowered or double-flowered; and spider varieties.

Common names: lisianthus, eustoma.
Lisianthus is also known as Texas Blue Bell.
It is available in colors of blue, lilac, rose, pink or white, available as a pot plant, bedding plant or cut flower.
These long-lasting flowers have four wide ruffled, delicate petals, with oval leaves.
Colors include white, light pink, dark pink, lavender, deep purple, also bicolors.
Double and single flower varieties exist.
Vase life is seven to 14 days. |
