| About Birmingham England |
Birmingham has grown from an Anglo-Saxon farming village into a major industrial and commercial city. During
the Industrial Revolution (from the mid 18th century onwards), Birmingham grew rapidly into a major industrial centre.
Unlike many other English industrial cities such as Manchester, industry in Birmingham was based upon small workshops rather than large factories or mills.
From the 1760s onwards, a large network of canals were built across Birmingham and the Black Country, to transport raw materials and finished goods, and
by the 1820s an extensive canal system had been constructed; Birmingham is often described as having more miles of canals than Venice, though probably rather
less picturesque.
During the Victorian
era, the population of Birmingham grew rapidly to well over half a million and Birmingham became the second largest population centre in Britain. |
It became known as the City of a thousand trades, and also as the Workshop of the world, due to the
wide array of industries located there. Birmingham's importance led to it being granted city status by Queen Victoria in 1889. Today, Birmingham is an important
manufacturing and engineering centre, employing over 100,000 people in industry and contributing billions of pounds to the national economy. Over a quarter
of the UK's exports originate in the greater Birmingham area. In recent years Birmingham's economy has diversified into service industries, retailing, tourism
and conference hosting, which are now the main employers in the city. Millions of people visit Birmingham every year, and in 2004 the city was named the
second best place to shop in England after the West End of London |

Sunflower
Common names: sunflower.
The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant in the Family Asteraceae with a large flower head (inflorescence).
The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with the flower head reaching 30cm in diameter.
These large field-grown flowers have 2 to 8 inch diameters.
Short petals surround a large disc.
Petal colors are pale or golden yellow, orange, red or bronze; discs are brown, black, or green.
Thick stems support single and double flower varieties.
Special care: Keep sunflowers hydrated to help stems support heavy head weight.
Place sunflowers in tall containers to provide adequate support for their height. |
Snapdragon
Common names: snapdragon.
Antirrhinum is a genus of plants that used to be the family Scrophulariaceae, more commonly known as snapdragons from the flowers' fancied resemblance to
the face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when properly squeezed.
These tall-spike stems usually have fully opened florets upon arrival with the buds on the upper portion showing a hint of color.
Flower colors include pink, purple, lavender, white, yellow, orange and burgundy.
Snapdragons are available year-round and will last five to 10 days.
Special care: Snapdragons drink lots of water, so check water level frequently. |
